ADuM1234 Data Sheet
The insulation lifetime of the ADuM1234 depends on the voltage
15V V 5V DD1 GND
waveform type imposed across the isolation barrier. The iCoupler
1 V 15V
insulation structure degrades at different rates depending on
DDA AND VDDB GNDA AND GNDB 15V ∆V
whether the waveform is bipolar ac, unipolar ac, or dc. Figure 15,
V ∆t DDA AND VDDB
Figure 16, and Figure 17 illustrate these different isolation voltage

waveforms.

15V V 15V DDA/VDDB
In the case of unipolar ac or dc voltage, the stress on the insulation
GNDA/GNDB
is significantly lower. This allows operation at higher working
V 15V DDB/VDDA GNDB/GNDA
voltages while still achieving a 50-year service life. The working
15V ∆V V ∆t
voltages listed in Table 8 can be applied while maintaining the

50-year minimum lifetime, provided that the voltage conforms

to either the unipolar ac or dc voltage cases.

06 Table 8 lists the peak voltages for 50 years of service life for Figure 17. DC Waveform a bipolar ac operating condition and the maximum working voltages recommended by Analog Devices. In many cases, the approved working voltage is higher than the 50-year service life voltage. Operation at these high working voltages can lead to shortened insulation life in some cases. Rev.
