  INTRODUCTION
  This application note features 8-, 10-, and 12-bit data
  acquisition components in various circuit configurations.
  The circuits include battery monitoring, temperature sensing, isolated serial interfaces, and microprocessor and
  microcontroller serial and parallel interfaces. Also included are voltage reference circuits (Application Note 42
  contains more voltage reference circuits). Additional circuit information is located in the information
  references listed in the Circuit Index. Each information
  reference refers to either an application note (example:
  AN42 = Application Note 42), a data sheet (example:

  Design Note 14 High Speed Operation
  Although the EIA RS232 specification is for a relatively
  slow communications protocol, many applications
  require RS232 transceivers to operate at higher frequencies. Devices such as the LTВ®1080, LT1081, and the
  LT1130 series share a common design for the drivers
  and receivers and are capable of operating over 100
  kilobaud.
  Although the slew rate is controlled for all of the Linear
  Technology series of RS232 communications devices,
  for output levels limited to В±6V the transition time is
  fast enough to allow high baud rates. With a slew rate
  of approximately 10V per microsecond, it only takes
  1.2 microseconds for a 12V excursion. The two photos
  (Figure 1 and Figure 2) show the output waveform and
  delay associated with a 75kHz square wave input and a
  100kHz square wave. Delay times are in the order of 0.5
  microseconds and the total slew time is approximately 1.2 microseconds. Output load is 3k. Receivers are
  much faster and can handle these baud rates with no
  problem. For higher communication rates, a differential
  signal is recommended.

  system. Construction also requires close attention to the
  layout of the system grounds and other aspects of circuit
  board design to avoid noise problems.2 Designing circuitry for single supply operation is often an
  attractive simplification for reducing production costs. Yet
  many applications call for just a few additional supplies to
  solve simple interface problems. The example presented
  here describes how an advanced RS232 interface can simplify an A to D converter which processes bipolar signals. To accommodate bipolar inputs (–5 < VIN < 5), the
  LTC1094’s negative rail must be biased beyond the extreme
  signal swing, but below absolute maximum ratings for
  supplies. A 5.6V Zener diode, D1, provides a sufficient
  bias because the V– pin draws very little current. The LT®1180 RS232 transceiver includes a charge pump
  which produces low ripple supplies with sufficient surplus
  current to drive a CMOS A to D converter and precision
  voltage reference. The circuit in Figure 1 operates from
  a single 5V supply, and draws a total quiescent current
  of only 37mA. These features make the circuit ideal for
  applications which must process bipolar signals with
  minimal support electronics. The A to D converter communicates with a remote controller via three wires, which carry the clock, the configuration
  word, and the output data. The chip select signal, CS, is

  In 1992 Linear Technology introduced the п¬Ѓrst RS232
  interface circuits capable of surviving in excess of В±10kV
  ESD transients. Since that time, LTC has introduced
  more than 30 products with this level of protection.
  The inherent ruggedness of these products eliminates
  the need to use external protection devices in most
  applications. Not one unit has been returned from the
  п¬Ѓeld to Linear Technology for an ESD related failure
  analysis since the enhanced ESD protected devices
  were introduced.
  The В±10kV ESD voltage rating is based on the Human
  Body ESD Model. When evaluated with other standard
  ESD test methods, the superior ESD ruggedness of
  LTC’s transceivers gives equally impressive results
  when compared to older conventional designs.
  The various ESD test methodologies all share a common configuration as shown in Figure 1. A source
  capacitor is п¬Ѓrst charged to a high voltage, then the
  high voltage power supply is disconnected from the
  capacitor, and the capacitor is connected to the device
