Introduction
The high speed op amps required to buffer a modern
16вЂ‘/18-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) typically
dissipate as much power as the ADC itself, often with
a maximum offset spec of aboutВ 1mV, well beyond
that of the ADC. If multiple multichannel ADCs are
required, the power dissipation can quickly rise to
unacceptable levels.
The simple buffer presented here is capable of driving
the LTC В®2372-18 8-channel ADC and achieving near
data sheet SNR, THD and offset performance with very
low power dissipation if the input signals involved are
in the range of DC to 1kHz.
Circuit Description
The LTC2372-18 is a low noise, 500ksps, 8-channel
18вЂ‘bit successive approximation register (SAR)ADC.
Operating from a single 5V supply, the LTC2372вЂ‘18
achieves вЂ“110dB THD (typical), 100dB (fully
differential)/95dB (pseudo-differential) SNR (typical) …

Introduction
Linear TechnologyвЂ™s Over-The-TopВ® op amps have
an input stage topology that allows them to operate
closed loop well above the positive supply rail. The
inputs remain high impedance when split apart in
voltage and also when shut down or with complete
loss of power supply. They are indispensable in robust
systems, where reliability is required in the face of
uncertain power sequencing. The LT6015, LT6016 and
LT6017 extend the op amp operational input voltage
capability to 76V, and improve precision with trimmed
offset voltage of 350ВµV (max) over all common mode
input voltages and over temperature.
Input TopologyвЂ”Theory of Operation
An Over-The-Top input stage is shown in Figure 1.
At low common modes, the PNPs Q1 and Q2 form a
